CAVANNA PASTA MARCH NEWSLETTER
Wheat Prices Skyrocket
If any of you have been watching the news
lately, you are aware that wheat prices have gone out of control. The
price on March 1st was $10.33 per bushel, more than twice what it was
a year ago. Wheat stockpiles are at a 60-year low. Demand for alternative
energy has farmers planting less wheat and more corn -- the key ingredient
of ethanol. Add the growing appetite for wheat from developing countries
and the supply is strained. Our ConAgra mills sales rep showed us company
documentation that said in 2000 the US produced 950 million bushels of
wheat. This year, they predict only 268 million bushels to be produced,
and 101% of it is already committed to export!
Cavanna Pasta uses
durum wheat. In June 2007, durum was priced at $6.70 a bushel to mills.
Today, it's at $23.50 a bushel, an increase of 251%. Durum wheat is 70%
of our plain pasta. Eggs make up 30%. Even the price of eggs has doubled
over the past year.
So it is with great reluctance that we must raise our prices to maintain
a modest profit margin while keeping our pasta available and affordable.
